The
Diamond Springs Cemetery is on Sec. 35 in Overisel Twp. on the northwest side of 136th Avenue on 38th Street.
It was formed as the "Heath & Overisel Rural Cemetery Association" and was opened on Oct. 19, 1886. It is small with many unmarked graves. Inscriptions were copied July 5, 1961 by Ruth Robbins. |
A piece of land where Diamond Cemetery now exists, in Section 35, was owned by Otis B. Johnson and his wife Emily. Both of Racine County Wisconsin.
On October 19, 1886, the Johnsons's sold this land, which is now Diamond Springs, an unincorporated local within the Montery Township. The buyer, being a corporation, organized under the provisional of Chapter 181 of Howell's Annotated Statues of the State of Michigan called "The Heath and Overisel Rural Cemetery Association" bought this piece of land for $40. Homer B. Freyer and Alfred B. Taylor signed this document. As with the other cemeteries in Overisel Township, persons were buried here before the cemetery association was officially organized and owned by the township. Another cemetery in Section 2 of Heath Township, called Dowd Cemetery was located on the Dowd farm. When Mr. A.H. Lange bought the Dowd farm, he removed all the Dowd farm tombstones, putting most of them in the Diamond Springs Cemetery. Along with its location in Diamond Springs, Diamond Springs Cemetery existed partially on the Van Buren farm. The plot map of the cemetery, as well as, the burial records was kept by Mr. and Mr. Ira Van Buren. Hence, a cemetery called the Van Buren Cemetery existed close to the Diamond Springs Cemetery. After Ira Van Buren's decease, his wife, Matilda (Robyler) Van Buren, maintained the map and records. A mishap occured when the Van Buren's house was completely destroyed by fire in the 1930's. All of the cemetery records were burned and lost. The remains of the stones and any possible death certificates are all we know about the Diamond Springs Cemetery. |
